Abdominal Surgery

Two abdominal surgeries we perform here at Cave Creek Equine Surgical & Imaging Center are

  • Laparoscopy
  • Hernia Repair

Equine Laparoscopy

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. Compared with open surgery, the benefits of laparoscopic surgery include smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain, shorter recovery times, with a faster return to normal activities. For horses, laparoscopy is used most commonly to remove ovaries from mares with ovarian tumors or with behavioral problems. It is also used in cryptorchid stallions to remove retained testicles.

Equine Hernia Repair

Anytime you see a bulge in what should be a smooth structure of your horse’s body wall, please make an appointment so we can identify the source of the swelling. Many types of hernias are correctable with prompt attention, allowing your horse to have a healthy quality of life and continued performance career.
