IRAP Therapy
Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Protein (IRAP) therapy is an advanced regenerative treatment used to manage joint inflammation and promote healing in horses with arthritis or joint injuries. At Cave Creek Equine® Sports Medicine & Surgery, we offer IRAP as part of our comprehensive approach to keeping equine athletes comfortable, sound, and performing at their best.
IRAP is derived from the horse’s own blood. The process involves drawing a small blood sample and incubating it in a specialized syringe containing medical-grade beads. These beads stimulate the white blood cells to produce anti-inflammatory proteins, particularly the Interleukin-1 receptor antagonist. After incubation, the blood is processed and the resulting serum, rich in healing proteins, is injected directly into the affected joint.
Because IRAP is autologous (from the horse’s own body), there’s minimal risk of reaction, and the therapy works to naturally block damaging inflammation within the joint.
IRAP is commonly recommended for:
IRAP is often used alongside other regenerative therapies, like PRP or stem cell treatment, to support a well-rounded recovery plan.
IRAP can be administered over a series of treatments, depending on the condition and response. We use advanced diagnostic tools, including ultrasound and MRI, to identify joint issues and guide targeted therapy.
At Cave Creek Equine®, we understand that joint health is essential to a horse’s performance and long-term soundness. Our team designs custom treatment plans that may include IRAP to promote healing, reduce pain, and extend your horse’s career.
Whether your horse is dealing with arthritis, recovering from surgery, or simply needs joint support to stay competitive, IRAP may be the right solution. Contact our team today to schedule a consultation and learn more about regenerative joint therapies.
